It all began when Irving Patterson, a Sanford native, invited his son Mark to come work with him in new home construction. A few years later, son Greg joined as a third partner and helped PATCO expand with a commercial construction company branch of the business specializing in steel and metal building construction. Over the years, the Patterson family all worked together to build the business, with Irving’s wife Lorene, and three other sons helping out when needed. Even with the customized options, the project stuck to its budget as well as to a perfect timeline. When Fore River Brewing opened, it included a dedicated space for a laboratory and offices, and house equipment to increase brewing capacity by over six times that of their previous location. After conducting a soil test, the crew learned that the building site, located in a Portland industrial park with a marshy area, had a big layer of clay that needed to be addressed before the project could start. PATCO and Weir were ready for problems to arise, and the soil issue was no big surprise. So, they loaded the site with three feet of gravel and waited over three months for it to compress the ground.
